Management Information System (MIS)
University of Melbourne MIS
The University of Melbourne has developed an Oracle based MIS platform for warehousing, analysing and disseminating a broad range of university data. When fully developed it will contain student, staff, financial, research and university space data along with an array of reports to complement this data. Currently the MIS contains finance, staff and some student data.
Other Data Platforms
The Finance and Planning Group has also developed a suite of student data cubes via a Microsoft SQL Server platform. This data is interactive and can be viewed via a web browser or Microsoft Excel, either by directly connecting to the server or by downloading self contained "offline cubes". The data in these MS SQL Server Data Cubes has yet to be fully incorporated into the University MIS.
The Offline Cubes are standalone and do not require connection to the Microsoft SQL server. Each offline cube is a full snapshot of an online cube up to a point in time. All efforts are made to keep the two types of cubes synchronised however lags do occur and where possible it is preferable to use online cubes.
Supplementary Information and Resources
Oracle MIS
Using the University MIS requires training in the use of Oracle's BI plug in for Excel [email Carol Smith(carolas@unimelb.edu.au)], the assignment of login credentials to the MIS server [email Noel Ferrer (nferrer@unimelb.edu.au) or Rudy Fun (rfun@unimelb.edu.au)] and installation of the Excel plug in (download from MIS wiki).
Microsoft SQL Server Data Cubes
Use of the Microsoft SQL data cubes requires Internet Explorer, registration of credentials to the Microsoft SQL server [email Tom Vlahiotis (tomv@unimelb.edu.au) or Alferd Alferd (aalferd@unimelb.edu.au)], updating of a range of Microsoft Windows and Office software components (OLE DB Provider 9.0, MSXML6.0 and OLE DB Provider 10.0) and registration of your computer's IP address [email Tom Vlahiotis (tomv@unimelb.edu.au)].
