Research Summary Data

Research performance is reported in terms of research income, publications, Research Higher Degrees (RHD) completions and RHD load (EFSTL). These are the key national research indicators, and are used as key drivers by the Commonwealth Government in the allocation of research block grant funding.

Research performance data dashboard is derived from Melbourne Research Office published reports, and from staff and student datasets maintained by the University Planning Office. Detailed statistical data for Research Income and Publications can be sourced from the Melbourne Research Office.

Income is reported as per the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST, now the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR)) reporting requirements, with funding shown as funding received in each year per category. School of Enterprise allocations are included in total figures (to reflect inclusion in DEST income collections). Publications include only DEST categories A1, B1, C1 and F1. Both weighted score and unweighted unapportioned count of publications are included in the dashboard.

Staff is derived from DEST submission files, showing full-time and fractional full-time continuing and fixed term employees as at 31 March in each year. For research purposes, only FT and FFT staff Level B (Lecturer) and above classified as Teaching & Research or Research Only are included (as full-time equivalent) as at the DEST census date. All casual staff data is excluded.

Data for all departments and faculties is included. In some cases, due to local coding practices, departments may not have complete data-sets (for example, a department may have staff assigned to it, but no income).
